Frederic フレデリック is an “interesting three-piece band from Kobe featuring twin brothers Kenji (Vo/Gt) and Kouji Mihara (Ba/Cho), and Kenji’s classmate Ryuji Akagashira (Gt). Their music videos and lyrics convey a unique sense of humour, while at the same time featuring wide musical background. Their music is best described as “addictive” and they have shown themselves to be adaptive in the ever-changing music scene of Japan.
Their major debut came in the form of their mini-album “oddloop” オドループ in September 24, 2014. This album has also won the Kansai block local award at the 7th CD Shop Awards in 2015. The song of the same name was featured as a theme song for the Original Animation DVD (OAD) of “Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches.” (山田くんと７人の魔女). It was also used for UNIQLO’s web CM “FLEECE for FUN” and can be heard in Singapore’s outlets. In 2016, Frederic was given the honour of headlining “SPACE SHOWER RETSUDEN JAPAN TOUR”.
Branding themselves as a “five-man multi-directional negative disco punk band” at the end of 2009, Kyuso Nekokami consists of Seiya Yamasaki (Vo/Gt), Kazuma Okazawa (Gt), Takuro Kawakubo (Ba), Shinnosuke Yokota (Key/Vo), and Taisuke Sogo (Dr). Their band takes pride in their own of a kind aggressive live performances and was named after an accessory in the video game Final Fantasy X-2. It is also in reference to the Japanese proverb “Kyuso neko wo kamu” きゅうそねこをかむ, which translates as “A cornered rat will bite a cat.”
Kyuso Nekokami’s songs pokes fun at the idiocy of life which can be seen from their candid and frank lyrics and video content. The song “Sagi-grapher” サギグラファー highlights the society’s obsession with Photoshop and in “Phantom Vibration” ファントムヴァイブレーション, the lyrics and video is an honest depiction of people today and their mobile phones. Most of their videos have gone viral, garnering more than a million views on YouTube.
04 Limited Sazabys
Embodied by youthful high-toned vocals and extremely addictive melodies, 04 Limited Sazabys (pronounced as “four limited sazabys”) is a rock band formed in Nagoya in 2008, consisting of GEN (Ba/Vo), HIROKAZ (Gt), RYU-TA (Gt/Cho), and KOUHEI (Dr/Cho). When deciding their band’s name, GEN suggested something along the lines of “04 Limited”. Former drummer, UDO, who was an avid fan of the Mobile Suit Gundam series, then contributed the word “Sazaby” サザビー which was in reference to the mobile suit “MSN-04 Sazabi” that appeared in Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack.
In their first nationwide solo tour “TOY tour 2015”, tickets to all their shows were sold out. On April 2016, they successfully organised and held their first outdoor festival “YON FES 2016” in their hometown of Aichi. During these performances, they had shown impressive staging and free-spirited talks between songs. Their discography has also shown remarkable success in the form of “AIM”, which became the band’s first single to reach Top 10 on Japan’s Oricon Chart.
