Fans of animation giant Studio Ghibli rejoice! Even as the beloved Ghibli Museum in Mitaka is currently closed for maintenance and upgrading, you can still get your fix of in-depth Ghibli goodness at a massive exhibition set to open at Roppongi Hills!
This exhibition promises to deliver a comparable experience to the actual Ghibli Museum with its sheer size, displaying content all the way from Ghibli classic Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind to the animation studio’s latest work in collaboration with French animation studio Wild Bunch; The Red Turtle.
This exhibition will feature old posters and flyers of the movies on display, along with the original pitches for the concepts behind the movies as well as many, many pieces of behind-the-scenes material such as sketches of the scenes in the movies. Of course, there will also be large exhibits starring scale recreations iconic characters like the Catbus from My Neighbor Totoro and even a statue of Ponyo from Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea in her half-fish half-human form standing around in the merchandise corner!
Tickets for the exhibition will be going for 2,300JPY for an adult ticket. Discounted prices for students, children and the elderly* will also be available at 1,700JPY, 1,100JPY and 2,000JPY respectively! For those planning to travel to Japan, it would also be wise of you to reserve your tickets in advance as you will receive a 100JPY discount. Furthermore, if you decide to visit the exhibition on a weekday you will receive a 300JPY discount off your ticket, and going after 6pm will net you a 500JPY discount!
* Students are those in high school or university/college, children are those between the ages of 4 to 15 (junior high) and the elderly are those above the age of 65
