From the 1967 novel by Yasutaka Tsutsui comes The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (時をかける少女), a story about a young girl who gains time-travelling powers and is eventually made to solve the mystery behind her powers by leaping back four days into the past.
The premise, while simple, has captivated the hearts of audiences all over the world and Japan to the point that this novel now boasts manga, anime, film and various live-action drama adaptations! Fans who are eager to see a different interpretation of the story will be excited to know that The Girl Who Leapt Through Time will spring to life again this summer through a brand new live-action television drama adaptation.
The main cast has also been revealed with Yuina Kuroshima (Ju-on‘s Yayoi, Hana Moyu‘s Takasugi Masa) set to take on the lead role of Mihane Yoshiyama. Those who follow the various adaptations of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time would have noticed that the protagonist’s name changes with every adaptation, with the most recent adaptation’s (a 2010 live-action film) protagonist being named Kazuko Yoshiyama as per the original. The 2006 anime adaptation’s heroine on the other hand was called Makoto Konno.
Taking on the role of Ken Sogoru – the time-traveller from the future masquerading as high school student Shouhei Fukamachi – is Fuma Kikuchi, a member of the Oricon chart-topping boy band, Sexy Zone. Based on the plot summary given on natalie.mu, the basic premise of the lavender scent triggering the events of the plot remains intact. Fans who loved the romance in the original novel can also anticipate a fresh new take in this adaptation as Ken‘s increasing feelings of attachment towards Mihane will tie him deeper to the present day. There will also be a greater focus on Ken trying to adapt to an era centuries behind his original timeline.
On the production side, Hitoshi Iwamoto (director of Designer Baby and Cleopatra na Onnatachi) will be directing the drama series and Ryohei Watanabe (writer of Sailor Zombie) will be in charge of the script. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is set to air on Nippon TV every Saturday at 9p.m., Japan Standard Time starting from July 2016.
We are definitely looking forward to seeing what this new adaptation of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time can offer us! The fact that it has seen adaptation after adaptation for the past fifty years is a testament to its timeless (no pun intended) influence on Japanese pop culture.
