When one thinks of sports anime, one would usually think of anime such as Slam Dunk, Free!, Haikyuu!! and even Ace of Diamond. These sports have one thing in common: they portray some of Japan’s best performing sports in the international sporting arena. With the rise of Yuzuru Hanyu as the global figure and national icon in figure skating, it is surprising that there has not been an anime about that sport yet. Figure skating fans, fret no more.
A new original anime project, Yuri!!! On ICE, now has its official website up and running. The original production is set to be about figure skating although little has been revealed about the plot at this time of writing. However, some names have been revealed to be involved in the production of this anime!
Listed on the official website are Mitsurou Kubo (who is most well known for being the mangaka behind Moteki and Again!), Sayo Yamamoto, a female director best known for directing the Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine and Michiko to Hatchin anime series, and MAPPA, an anime studio that worked on Garo: The Animation and Ushio and Tora. However, at this time of writing, it is not known what roles Kubo and Yamamoto will be holding for the production of this anime.
Those interested to find out more about this project can look forward to Anime Japan 2016, where the Avex Pictures booth will hold more information about this new sports anime, and interested viewers can find out more on 27 March (Sunday), 11.30a.m to 12.p.m. (UTC +9 Japan Standard Time) as a new teaser video will be screened during that period! Mitsurou Kubo and Sayo Yamamoto are also set to appear at the booth for this screening.
We are definitely looking forward to seeing what this new anime will bring to the table! As winter sports are not as well-represented in anime as more conventional sports, perhaps this anime could offer us new insights into this more elusive sports category!
