Game Review: Kamen Rider Battleride War Genesis

Kamen Rider Battleride War Genesis, the 3rd game in the series, was revealed during the Tokyo Game Show 2014. Produced by Eighteen and Bandai Namco, this Kamen Rider game, akin to the famed Dynasty Warriors, features playable Primary and Secondary Riders from the Heisei and Neo Heisei Era, as well as certain Riders from the Showa Era,most notably Kamen Rider Ichigo.

Story:

The story is set when Kamen Riders from past to present are erased from time, until 2 Kamen Riders, Den-O and Ghost survived the incident. Den-O is the Kamen Rider that travels through time with the help of his time traveling train. Ghost was killed off before he become a Rider, sparing him from the bizarre fate that happen to the other Kamen Riders. Together, they travel to the times when the other Riders fought their first battle following which, the monsters would be immune to the rider’s finisher, their Rider Kick. Behind the scenes, Shadow Moon, Kamen Rider Black’s rival and half brother plans his revenge.

Mechanics

Mach and Kamen Rider Faiz’s motorcycle, Auto Vajin in combat, one of the missions is to defeat  between 100 and 300 enemies to proceed on to the next part of the level (in this case its 300)

Returning Battleride War fans will be happy to know that battle styles remained unchanged for returning Kamen Riders, with the Ultimate Form from Battleride War II remaining unchanged. For newcomers, Ultimate Form is achieved when one presses the finisher keys, (in the Playstation’s case, R2 twice) causing the Rider to go into their Ultimate Form. To illustrate, Den-O will go into its Final Form, Climax Form once R2 is pressed once, and then Cho-Climax Form once its pressed again. The same goes for Kugga (Yusuke Orodara) from Ultimate Form into Rising Ultimate. In contrast, the Original Kugga (Yusuke Godai), goes into Ultimate Form, but does not gets Rising Ultimate. Usually, pressing R2 once will change your Riders into their final show form and R2 twice will change your rider into their final movie form, if they have a final movie form.

Dead Heat Mach before performing his Ultimate attack

A new mechanic is the Double Rider Kick, where you can choose a second Rider as a “Tag Partner” ( or Auto Vajin once Faiz is unlocked) to do a Double Rider Kick Finisher. The AI controlled rider will fight with you at times, or get in your way, pushing the boss out of an otherwise perfectly placed Rider Kick.

Each level is separated into 3 or 4 parts, where you must go to that point to fight the stage boss several times, all while completing challenges and collect Gachapon riders to help power up your Rider’s stats.

Overall Verdict

What we liked What could be improved on
Most of the Primary and Secondary Riders from Showa and Heisei Eras are playable Some previously playable Riders from previous games have become NPCs
Double Rider Kick mechanics gives variety in finishing boss enemies as well as clearing waves of enemies. Despite giving variety, the normal ultimate attack mechanics gives the Rider its ultimate form and stats increment. This may prove the Ultimate Form to be more useful/popular than the Double Rider Kick mechanic.
Riders from the previous games use the same battle animations and powers. Seasoned gamers who have played previous titles are used to the Rider’s battle styles Some players will think the Rider’s battle style is too boring as they have appeared in the previous games.
The level designs and character designs are outstanding and the level of detail in character models in the video sequence – even the interactions between you and the second Rider when performing a double Rider kick – is a small but essential touch to show the various rider interactions between one another, even if they are from a different series altogether. After playing for a long time, just like most Hack and Slash games, the interactions and levels will seem really repetitive.
Those who have the first batch of games and a Japan PSN will be able to download a special version of Kamen Rider 1, where you can play as his civilian form, Takeshi Hongo in a Shocker uniform

Conclusion and Verdict

If you are familiar with and like playing Dynasty Warriors/Samurai Warriors/Warriors Orochi as well as getting into Kamen Rider or are a fan of Kamen Rider, get this game. It is worth your time and effort, as you can enjoy playing as your favourite Primary and Secondary Riders from most of the Showa series and all of the Heisei series tuntil the 45th Anniversary
