The 20th anniversary of Neon Genesis Evangelion has certainly generated much buzz within Japanese society and otakus alike with collaborations such as themed shinkansen and live viewings of the anime all over Japan. The latest item in the celebrations is an Evangelion-themed Android smartphone from Sharp. Only 30,000 of such phones will be produced and sold. Interested buyers will have to apply for the chance to even have the rights to buy the phone at 7-11 stores across Japan.
This special phone, called the SH-M02-EVA20 will cost 84,240 yen (about SGD$977). It has a green and purple livery and features a white image of Unit-01, the mech piloted by Evangelion hero Shinji. The Unit-01 theme is peppered through other elements of the phone’s design such as the volume control buttons which are coloured orange, a unique Android scheme that follows the livery’s colour scheme and a phone case meant to replicate the appearance of the mecha.
However, it should be noted that the SH-M02-EVA20 is as powerful compared to other Android devices on the market. Running on Android 5.0, the Sharp-made phone has a 5-inch, 720 x 1,280 HD display, a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon chip, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of internal storage with support for up to 32GB microSD cards.
Other than that, there are 365 custom wallpaper images that change each day and original audio notifications in the form of characters’ voices, all recorded with the original cast, which fans can look forward to if they got to the chance to order it The first 5,000 units should be available in December, while the rest will be released into the market in April 2016.
