Nitroplus and DMM Games’ highly popular online browser game ‘Touken Ranbu -ONLINE-’ (刀剣乱舞-ONLINE-) has been confirmed to be planning its very own stage play and musical.
According to Nitroplus, MARVELOUS!, known for adapting a play for ‘Yowamushi Pedal’, will be in charge of the straight play adaptation of the game, while Nelke Planning (known for heading the ‘Prince of Tennis’ musical) will be leading the musical performance.
For those unfamiliar with ‘Touken Ranbu’, the game is an online browser game created as collaboration between DMM Games and Nitroplus (which did the scenario writing and character designs). Within the world of Touken Ranbu, famous katanas in the history of Japan are anthropomorphised as ‘Blade-Men’ (刀剣男士; touken danshi), who join the player’s party as they develop through the game.
The game is extremely popular in Japan and across the world, especially towards the female audience. The game had also, only recently, ignited a booming interest in many females towards blades and swords – as can be seen from the unprecedented increases of young female visitors in various historical museums, art museums, and even traditional blade-smithies in Japan.
It was only a matter of before this highly popular game made an entrance to the stage, with leading companies, MARVELOUS! and Nelke Planning taking the lead for the respective conversions of the game into a straight play and musical.
As further information has yet to be released, do follow Nitroplus’ official website for future updates regarding the play and musical.
According to Nelke Planning’s Twitter, the Musical has been confirmed to begin its first performance in May 2016 and will begin trial performances from October 2016.
