Fans of Nintendo‘s Super Smash Brothers fighting game series would likely have kept up with the release of the fourth and latest installation in the series for the Wii U and 3DS consoles end last year. The latest installation, affectionately dubbed as “SSB4” for short by its sizeable player base, comes with 48 playable characters at the point of release, an increase from the 37 from the previous Super Smash Brothers Brawl game. Players who owned both a copy of the Wii U and the 3DS game could also unlock an additional 49th “secret” character – Mewtwo.
The Super Smash Brothers series changes its playable character roster for each release to allow players to enjoy a different variety each time round, so inevitably some veteran characters may get “dropped” from the roster to make way for newer ones. Sometimes, though, the developers may have concealed some hidden plans up their sleeves in order to keep the players’ enthusiasm high, and revelatory discoveries of these are undoubtedly bound to cause much excitement within the player community.
This was precisely what happened when the most recently updated patch for SSB4 got an unintended premature release in Japan, allowing some enthusiasts to notice substantial footage of two new characters Ryu and Roy! Ryu from the Street Fighter universe is a new character whose appearance in the patch is his first ever appearance as a playable character in the series, while Roy from the Fire Emblem universe had his last appearance in Super Smash Brothers Melee.
With the inclusion of both Ryu and Roy into SSB4 gameplay, the playable cast could potentially increase to a grand unprecedented total of 51 – for now.
