FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015: Japan Qualifies For Round of 16

The defending champions of the world became the first team to qualify for Round of 16 of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015 after a narrow 2-1 win over Cameroon last night. Goals from Aya Sameshima and Yuika Sugasawa in the opening 20 minutes convinced the crowd at BC Place Stadium that Japan will qualify for the Round of 16.

However, Cameroon began to pressurise the defending champions not long after that. The attacking mindset of Cameroon began to show, with many chances wasted and not even testing the goalkeeper. However, after hard work, Cameroon did get a goal at the 90th minute by Ajara Nchout but it was nothing more than a consolation goal.

With 2 victories for Japan and having secured their spot in the Round of 16, they will face Ecuador for the final match of the Group Stage with ease. The final game for Japan in the group stage will be played at Winnipeg Stadium on the 16th June, on the same day as the Men’s Football FIFA World Cup 2018 Asian Qualifiers match against Singapore.
