FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015: Miyama’s penalty seals first victory against Switzerland

FIFA Women’s World Cup defending champions, Japan, is off to a decent start with a victory over Switzerland 1-0 in their Group C opening match of the group stages at the BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, Canada.

On the 29th minute, Swiss goalkeeper, Gaelle Thalmann, fouls Kozue Ando inside the penalty box, which was a clear goalscoring opportunity for Japan. Aya Miyama converted the penalty well, despite the Swiss goalkeeper going the right way.

Switzerland had a chance to equalize just before half-time after a wonderful dribble from Ramona Bachmann against 4 Japanese defenders, but failed to strike the ball in the end.

Japan had a chance to double their lead in the second half with an opportunity from Yuika Sugasawa hitting the post.

Japan’s next game will be against Cameroon on 12th June in Vancover.
