The former IWGP Heavyweight Champion, Togi Makabe will challenge Tomohiro Ishii for the NEVER Openweight Championship at NJPW Wrestling Hinokuni. The event will take place at Gran Messe Kumamoto in Kumamoto, Japan, on the 29th April this year.
This match will be the second time this year that these two athletes meet against each other for the same championship. Their first encounter was when Makabe defeated Ishii at NJPW’s Wrestle Kingdom 9 in January this year at Tokyo Dome.
Ishii currently holds the 2nd longest streak for the NEVER Openweight Championship, defending his championship for 138 days, after winning the championship from Tetsuya Naito. The current record holder for the championship is Masato Tanaka, who not only defended his title for 314 days, but also became the first ever NEVER Openweight Champion in 2012.
Ishii became a member of a stable named “CHAOS” in 2009. In addition to Ishii’s match, other members of “CHAOS” will also compete in series of tag matches, including one against “BULLET CLUB” which have been dominant since Kenny Omega and AJ Styles held the Junior Heavyweight and the Heavyweight Championship titles respectively.
