Lantis Festival in Singapore Coverage Part 4

We now bring you Part 4 of our Lantis Festival Coverage! This part features one of the queens of Anisong, so much so that we are dedicating a whole article just for her! Behold, the cute and powerful Minori Chihara!

Minori Chihara, affectionate called Minorin, is a beloved seiyuu and singer. In fact, she just recently concluded her 10th anniversary celebrations last year with a concert in the famed Nippon Budokan! The Singaporean audience is certainly blessed to have her exclusively for the Singapore leg of the Anisong World Tour! After OLDCODEX’s set was cleared out, the clear chimes to 純白サンクチュアリィ  (Junpaku Sanctuary) rang across the hall. The audience began to rise for this talented lady and soon enough, Chihara appeared in perhaps the most elaborate garb for the night, decked in a blue two-piece with flowing sleeves and knee-high boots. The song was also used as the theme song to the anime Kiddy Grade Viola and is significant in that it was her first single after a two  year  hiatus from her singing career! Her appearance alone already invited massive screaming from the male audience members but the passionate yet mysterious aura of the song sent most of the audience singing along with her.

Following Junpaku Sanctuary was TERMINATED, which was also used as the theme song to the anime Kyoukaisenjo no Horizon. Another hit single from Chihara, the fast-paced and action-packed nature of the sound saw the audience members banging their penlights to the epic beats. Chihara herself is a very animated performer too and her years of musical experience shows through her stable performance despite her intense movements on stage. After two energetic numbers back-to-back, Chihara commenced her emcee segment. She apologised to the crowd for having poor English, to which the crowd replied ‘daijoubu’. She then proceeded to comment on her time in Singapore and found the food to be delicious.

M:And now, I will be doing a collaboration with JAM Project’s Okui Masami-san!

True to the last words of her first emcee segment, Masami Okui, JAM Project’s only female member emerged from the wings of the stage clad in a kimono-esque outfit. This was bound to be a collaboration of epic proportions! The announced song was none other than 輪舞-Revolution-(Rinbu Revolution) from Revolutionary Girl Utena! Another classic from an old-school anime, the fans found themselves singing along to this nostalgic hit! It was definitely one of the highlights from the already action-packed night! Their voices blended well with each other’s and it was indeed an audio and visual spectacle to behold as one of the modern Anisong artistes teamed up with an Anisong legend!

After that, the awesome collaboration came to an end and saw the continuation of Chihara’s solo segment. The opening sequence to a hit anime began to play on the big screen. The fans were immediately able to tell what was coming for them. 境界の彼方 (Kyoukai no Kanata) was sung. As one of the theme songs to a fairly iconic anime from 2013, many fans sang along to Chihara. It proved to be one of the most moving numbers for the whole night aside from Choucho’s Snow Halation and Kenichi Suzumura’s SHIPS. Her emotional rendition combined with her musical stability made the live version even better than the recorded version!

Following that was another surprise from Chihara. The mysterious opening synths to 雪、無音、窓辺にて(Yuki, Muon, Madobe nite) filled the hall. She was going to sing a character song from Suzumiya Haruhi No Yuutsu! Yuki Nagato, the role that she played from said anime, was the one that arguably drove her to stardom. It was fanservice to her longtime fans as she even performed the ad-libs during the character song live, creating a performance that doubled as an afureko and live performance as well! A truly talented performer indeed!

Chihara ended her segment with perhaps her most iconic song to date: one etched into the hearts of Anisong fans. It was Paradise Lost from Ga-Rei Zero! With so many fans familiar with the lyrics and the generally epic feel to the song, many started banging their penlights against the air and singing along! During the bridge where the lyrics went “Lost the paradise”, the audience went wild, filling in the lines for Chihara. It was definitely a fitting end to her performance!

Fans definitely wanted more from the Anisong talent, with many screaming for her to come back on stage again. However, the show had to go on and it was time for the final act.
